Starting with the innumerable contributions of the pre-Christian Etruscan and Latin civilizations, Italy has made – and continues to make – its indelible mark on world culture. Influencing almost every sector of human development and expression, the Italian genius is ubiquitously evident. With its incomparable heritage of millennial artistic splendor, early 20th Century Italy was destined to add even greater glory to its cultural patrimony. Through its innovative contributions to the newborn medium of movie-making, Italian directors, screenwriters, actors, technicians, et al. were able to elevate the moving picture to an art form admired and imitated throughout the world.
Among the films to be viewed, analyzed, and discussed:
- Roma, città aperta, Roberto Rossellini, (1945)
- Sciuscià, (1946)
- Ladri di biciclette of Vittorio De Sica, (1948)
- Riso amaro, Giuseppe De Santis, (1949)
