They Came by Ship, by Mario Toglia

They Came By Ship: The Stories of the Calitrani Immigrants in America is the product of the Internet Age which brought together people researching their roots to their ancestral town of Calitri in Southern Italy. They came to know one another and, in many cases, rekindled old friendships and discovered distant relatives in second and third cousins. They began sharing stories on the internet of the good old days, recalling neighborhoods where their parents and grandparents had settled after emigrating from Italy. Their recollections proved to be so interesting and poignant to all that they needed to be set down in permanent form and preserved for future generations. The book contains over 100 personal and biographical stories, which illustrate various aspects of the lives, traditions and customs of the Calitrani community within the Italian immigrant experience. Also included are several newspaper articles and obituaries, as well as a list of more than 4000 Calitrani names who settled in America.

8 ½ (1963) by Federico Fellini

One of the greatest films about film ever made, Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2 (Otto e Mezzo) turns one man’s artistic crisis into a grand epic of the cinema. Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni) is a director whose film-and life-is collapsing around him. An early working title for the film was La Bella Confusione (The Beautiful Confusion), and Fellini’s masterpiece is exactly that: a shimmering dream, a circus, and a magic act. 1963 Academy Award® winner for Best Foreign-Language Film-one of the most written about, talked about, and imitated movies of all time.

In Italian with English subtitles, 140 minutes.

Antologia del Cinema Italiano

A series of four lectures presented by Professor Joseph N. Spedaliere MA, Distinguished Professor of Italian Language and Culture at Concordia College.

The decade from 1954 to 1964 marks the golden age of Italian cinema. The peerless pantheon of its director gods – Rossellini, Visconti, Fellini, De Sica, Antonioni, Pasolini, et al. – have now redefined the art of cinema and helped to re-establish Italy as a land of creativity, compassion and culture. The times, however, they are a-changin’ once again. Fellini accepts the unenviable task of exploring the greater conflicts of the era, those within the mind and soul of the artist and modern man. His controversial cinematic milestone Otto e Mezzo (1963) is a prophetic warning of the ominous social crisis of the later ’60s.
